21 Sep Final ESRC Seminar Series event takes place in London

The seventh and final event of the ESRC seminar series took place in London on Tuesday 20 September 2016.

Twenty-two people attended the event, including academics, teachers, practitioners, community educators, doctoral students and more. The theme was ‘future directions’, and the event ended with a range if positive and optimistic ways forward. Watch this space for more details.

A manifesto for Freedom to Learn was launched. This will appear on this website very soon!

Thanks to everyone who has been involved with this series. Over 300 people are currently on the mailing list, which indicates that there is a groundswell of people who are interested in this work.     For what it’s worth, what I think should be the outcome of a general education to the assumption of citizenship in a democracy is to contribute to ‘fully developed individuals, fit for a variety of labours, ready to face any change of production, and for whom the various social functions they perform, are but so many modes of giving free scope to their own natural and acquired powers'(Marx Capital 1, 1971,494; quoted in my latest book ‘Betraying a Generation, How Education is Failing Young People’, Policy Press 2016).

    Meanwhile, I find Bruce Macfarlane has just published a book that I have been sent to review called ‘Freedom to Learn: The threat to student academic freedom and why it needs to be reclaimed’ (SRHE/Routledge).
